A Swiss guy called Dr Bircher-Benner created a recipe like this over 100 years ago to help his sick patients because oats, apples and berries have mighty powerful ways of helping your body feel better and keep well. Lucky for us, his remedy tastes so good it can be eaten anytime or better still, have it for breakfast and imagine how happy your innards will be when they are woken up by all this goodness!

Ingredients

1 cup organic rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened (no added sugar) apple juice
1 red apple, do not peel
4 tbs Attiki country-style honey-flavoured natural yoghurt
1 cup mixed fresh berries, to serve
Honey, to serve

To measure the ingredients: Use measuring cups or normal cups — just make sure you use the same cup for the entire recipe.

Method

1. Place the oats and apple juice in a large jar or container with a lid. Put the lid on and seal tightly. Shake until well combined. Place in the fridge and leave for 1 hour or overnight until all the juice has been absorbed and the mixture is a bit gloopy.
2. Grate the apple (throw away the apple core). Add the grated apple and yoghurt to the oat mixture. Now say “voila” (pronounced vwa-la) because you have made bircher muesli.
3. Divide the muesli among serving bowls. Top with berries and drizzle with honey. Now dig in!
